My name is Ilse Roets and I tutor students to become more confident in how they interact with maths. I am passionate about teaching maths to students in small groups of up to 6 students or 1-2-1.

I tutor in a very relaxed and friendly way as I want my students to enjoy their lessons and look forward to learning with me. Building a positive relationship is so important and is the first step to a successful tutor/student partnership. My lessons are tailored to the individual needs of the students I teach. Most importantly, we work at the pace that feels right for the student(s). Unlike a classroom teacher I am not constrained by the curriculum and I have the flexibility to spend as much or as little time as necessary on any topic.

Online lessons takes place via Zoom (security enabled), where I use a visualizer and graphics tablet alongside a mixture of MS PowerPoint or BitPaper. These tools enable me to provide my students with a virtual, tailored, learning experience in the comfort of their own home. It is really important for me to model answers and allow my students to explore their own individual learning style.

We recap and revisit topics regularly to make sure knowledge and understanding are embedded. Worksheets, marked-responses and lesson recordings are available via Cloud storage.

In the run up to the exam season I set a maths GCSE past paper for homework each week and this is where the exam technique really starts doing its work; ultimately the weekly practice gives my students the experience and the confidence to go on and achieve their target GCSE grades.

Over the years I’ve found the following to be important in my tutoring:

• There is more than one way to explain pretty much everything in maths and I will work with the student to find the best way for them.
• Confidence is key and I work with all my students on self-belief, nurturing a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and making maths fun and relevant.
• I encourage independent learning.
• I make myself available during the week for any help needed with homework.
